Gluten-Free Sour Cream Coffee CakeApologies for not being a more diligent blogger. For some reason, in my mind posting on this blog seems to be more of a production than the quick little updates I often post on Tumblr. I’m not sure why that is, except maybe since I pay for the hosting on this blog (whereas Tumblr is free) I feel obligated to make things at least appear more professional, like having better photos and stuff, but I’m going to try and let that go since a long lapse in between posts isn’t good.

It’s not that I haven’t done anything cake-related for the past few months, it’s just that I’ve also been doing other stuff. And I will freely admit that I have a bad habit of procrastinating. I need to work on that. Continue reading »

3D Ghost Cake 1999Fifteen years ago I made a 3D ghost cake for a dinner party. The ghost cake, designed by Carol Deacon, was featured in a British sugarcraft magazine I subscribed to at the time, and it was one of the few project tutorials I felt like I could do. Turns out, I was right because this cake is super easy. And quick, which is nice. Continue reading »

Fish Shaped Cake

Posting videos last month featuring cake designs for men gave me the the idea to re-do that horrible “Faulty Fish” cake I ranted on and on about ages ago in a Should’ve Done Sunday post. I mean, back when I created that mess I was new to cake decorating, and I could certainly do a better job of it now. Especially since I have the right luster dusts and know how to use them. Cakes Decorated Using Pattern Transfers

As some of you may already know, the Tennessee ICES Chapter hosts Sugar Play Days every other month. These are free cake decorating classes/demonstrations in Brentwood at Sugar Drop. At the April meeting, we learned how to model figures out of rolled fondant (generously provided by Fondarific), which was fun. For the June meeting, we’re sharing ideas for Father’s Day cakes, or cake designs for men in general. Continue reading »

Valentine Heart Cake

My most recent project was a heart cake. This is what happens when I have boxes of cake mix in my pantry that are close to their sell-by date, there’s a heart themed cake decorating contest going on, and I need some fresh fodder for my YouTube videos. Continue reading »

Rolled Fondant Snowflakes Cake

Well, I guess it IS January. Happy New Year everybody!

The weather where I live is bitterly cold at the moment, with record-low temperatures and crazy wind chills. This means I’ve been staying indoors as much as possible because I hate the cold, which gives me an opportunity to update my blog, and since the last post was about my new iPad, I thought I’d share some of the cake decorating videos I’ve made with it–if only to prove that I’m now using it for more than playing games. Wedding Cake with Gum Paste Roses

Most folks who know me in real life understand that I don’t make cakes for people. There are several reasons for this, and I won’t bore you guys with a lengthy explanation, but basically my kitchen isn’t set up for multiple ongoing projects, and I found it very difficult to make money doing cakes from home. Summer 2013 Issue Edible Artists Network MagazineBefore I even begin, let me just say that I’m not a fan of the name Edible Artists Network. To me it sounds like a group of artists you can eat, and since I’m not into cannibalism, I guess I’ll just have to push aside my pedantic tendencies because it’s actually a really cool website for edible art enthusiasts. ices2013logoLast week I drove up to Lexington, KY for the International Cake Exploration Societé Annual Convention. In my recent bread mix review I promised to post updates from convention because I would have my trusty Chromebook and iPhone. Well, I couldn’t connect to the hotel’s wifi for some reason, and I was so busy (plus tired by the end of each day) that I really didn’t want to spend the time or effort fighting with it. Update! Since I published this post, the freebies have changed, as they do every couple of weeks. So the links below will take you to the current freebies on offer, not the cupcake wrappers. I apologize about that!

Many months ago I reviewed the MyMemories Suite digital scrapbooking software. While I’m not heavily into scrabooking as a hobby, digital or otherwise, this is still a useful tool and a fun photo editor. In addition to making scrapbook pages, I’ve also created website banners as well as posters and flyers promoting my cake decorating classes. Continue reading »
